NVA’s eighth Annual Memorial Service took place on Saturday 26th February 2011 at St Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne.  Families from all over the UK, and one from France, took part in this moving event which this year, featured the participation of Louise Casey, the Victims’ Commissioner and Baroness Harris of Richmond. The one hour service which was conducted by Rt Rev Seamus Cunningham, Bishop of Newcastle and Hexham, also featured a special ‘Lament for Victims’ played by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle’s Official Northumbrian piper David Bailey.  Hundreds of bereaved relatives were accompanied by several Lords Mayor, Sheriffs and other civic dignitaries.  A white balloon release concluded the service and television crews from Sky, BBC and ITV, and several national newspapers reported the event.
